Photo inspiration + links for your weekend

What's not to love about this Spanish living room? The space is so serene, and I'm seriously coveting those wood floors! We installed medium-dark wood floors upstairs, but lately I've been thinking that I'd like to do something different downstairs. I love how rustic and warm these floors are, and the wide plank...swoon. I wonder if we could find something similar, with tones that relate to, but don't match, the flooring upstairs. Where do you stand on mixing hardwoods? I'm thinking it probably looks great when done right, but doing it right is the tricky part.

Here are your links!

-Remember those polka dot cupcakes I shared recently? The recipe is available in English now (thanks Anna!). Am I the only one who's never heard of steam baking before?
-If you haven't watched this show yet, you should.
-I bet you never had a term paper assignment like this in college.
-A great post from Emily Henderson on how to choose your perfect colour palette. Definitely worth reading. Twice.
-This would make a great DIY gift for kids.
-I'll bet the guy who called the Christmas tree a "passing fad" feels like an idiot.

Speaking of Christmas trees, we're getting ours this weekend - pictures to come! Have a good one!

I love the photo above. and those floors are gorgeous. I've been loving lighter wood floors a lot lately as well. I think you could absolutely do a mix of woods upstairs and down..I've seen it done plenty of times. I think it would look particularly nice if they are complete opposites like you're considering rather it looking like you tried to match the woods after doing them years apart. Go for it!

  3. That's what I'm thinking - especially since we likely won't do the downstairs floors until late next year. Nice to hear that you've seen it done plenty of times - makes me a little more confident :)

  4. I saw this apartment at Micasa magazine! ^__^

The nice thing about ligth wood floors is they look both warm and light. (I've been searching the model & brand because perhaps this would help you but the magazine doesnt' provide the brand, sorry)
Mixing floors is not uncommon, and it could look very very stylish. You only need to be careful with the transition, in this case, the stairs.

You know, I grew up believing that floors were different usptairs and downstairs. Many old style country houses in my hometown had stone or lovely patterned cement tiles downstairs and red terracotta tiles upstairs :-P
